Fair Count announces ‘Black Men Speak’ program and prepares for MLK ‘Census Week of Service’ with events throughout Georgia

ATLANTA — Today, Fair Count, Inc. announced in advance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day a new program, Black Men Speak. Black Men are historically the most undercounted of all racial and ethnic groups in the decennial census.

“Black Men Speak developed in conversations about the need for spaces for Black men to get together and really strategize about how to ensure we are all being counted and participating civically in Georgia and around the nation,” said Ed Reed, the Program Director for Fair Count.

Black Men Speak is a replicable program whereby Black men gather and have informal dialogues to come up with innovative strategies regarding the census and civic engagement at large. Hosted in homes, barbershops, community centers event spaces, and more, the program is supported by Fair Count and the ideas from the meetings will help steer mobilization efforts for the 2020 Census and civic participation efforts.

“It makes sense to kick this new program off during MLK Day weekend. We are committed to educating and mobilizing communities to ensure they are fairly and accurately counted in the upcoming census so they receive their fair share of resources and political power,” said Reed. “We honor Dr. King and his legacy by lifting up our communities and demanding equity and justice.”

The first Black Men Speak events will occur during Fair Count’s ‘Census Week of Service’in honor of MLK Day.
