Statement from Fair Count on SCOTUS ruling
regarding the citizenship question on the 2020 Census

“Today was a win for Democracy. The Supreme Court ruled in a complex decision that the citizenship question, for now, cannot be included in the 2020 Census. This was the right decision,” said Rebecca DeHart, CEO of Fair Count.

“Ensuring a fair and accurate count of all communities in this nation, particularly the hard-to-count populations, is imperative for fair distribution of dollars and for equitable representation. Our opposition to the inclusion of the citizenship question stems from our concern that already disenfranchised and undercounted communities would be less likely to participate, further isolating their communities from the tools, resources and representation they deserve.

“Fair Count is committed to working alongside communities and organizations in Georgia to ensure a fair and accurate count of all people in this state and to strengthen the pathways to future acts of civic participation.”
